Granit® Wet Oxidation

The Granit® Wet Oxidation technology (WOx) is suitable for the treatment of organic, non-biodegradable, material. 

The process reactions occur in supercritical conditions hence in a liquid phase, on the contrary to incineration. This essential characteristic enables the WOx to reach an outstanding cleanness of its outlet gases, as neither acid gases (NOx, SO2), nor dust or fly ash, nor dioxins are produced. Also the production of CO2 (greenhouse gas) is dramatically reduced.

During the process, the material to treat, is it a liquid or a solid, undergoes a modification of its structure and the WOx liquid outlet becomes entirely and easily biodegradable.

WOx has been already successfully applied to various civil and industrial wastes, including sludge from WWTP, effluents from pulp & paper industry, agro-industry, fine chemical industry, special hospital waste as well as effluents from refineries and from the petrochemical industry.

In addition, WOx has already proven its validity for the treatment of low radioactive waste, such as spent ion exchange resins from the nuclear industries and other contaminated material from scientific labs and from the health sector.

Granit Wet Oxidation fields of application

The recourse to the wet oxidation process is not only useful at handling pollution issues but can be coupled with significant material recovery targets:

  • Possibilities of heat recovery (e.g. production of hot water at 80-90°C which can be used for the  heating of the WWTP or of the industrial facilities).
  • For sites equipped with a digester, the WOx outlet can be returned to the methanisation tank and enhance the gas production (up to 20% more methane production).
  • Compared to incineration, operating conditions allow sludge input with lower solid contents, which enables a consequent economy of polymer consumption with regards to the sludge dewatering.
  • In case of WWTP sludge treatment, the solid residue is valuable in cement plants.


Waste Plastic Conversion

Granit Technologie and engineering (GRT) SA focuses on the realisation of projects that provide for the valorisation of non-recyclable plastic waste into diesel oil.

The plastic-to-fuel solution is a valid alternative both to landfilling and incineration as it enables a conversion of used plastic matters into product oil suited for various applications. The best products from plastic waste conversion can be obtained by using LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS.

PET and PVC are not suitable and must be attentively pre-sorted. 

In its composition and its properties the product oil is similar to fuel oil or diesel respectively. With the help of this efficient recycling procedure, plastic waste can at last return as feedstock for a second usage.

Municipal Waste Recycling

Granit Technologie and engineering (GRT) SA approach about waste management is to elaborate new plans, however based on proven technical applications, in order to build relevant alternatives to incineration and landfilling. The substantial aim of these alternatives is to be protective of the environment and of the human health by prioritizing recycling and making the most of the energy potential of the waste.



Within the above domains, Granit Technologies can perform R&D activities, offer its technologies under license arrangements and grants added value services which may include:

  • Performing laboratory tests to enable complete optimisation of processes through the full characterisation of specific effluents
  • Performing on-site tests, thanks to a devoted pilot-plant unit, to assist the qualification of the process
  • Designing and constructing tailor-made pilot plants for third parties
  • Elaborating basic engineering, interconnection engineering and, in some framework, detailed engineering
  • Carrying on risk analyses
  • Granting technical assistance during erection, commissioning, start-up and maintenance of industrial units

 Hydrogen storage program

A unique, patented, technology for the storage of hydrogen in formic acid, in view of the safe transportation and/or use under critical conditions. This promising program is actually under development for the supply of PEM fuel cells.

 Wood Torrefaction system

Granit Technologie and engineering (GRT) SA is extensively involved in the pre-industrial stage development of a wood-torrefaction system conceived by the Swiss Heig-VD (Yverdon).
